AC/DC's Marketing Formula and Hanging Out with the Right Crowd

At the pool this morning and my mate says ‘what can I expect to read from you when I get to work this morning Leigh?’

and I say, ‘I haven’t written it yet….’

So he says….’well, Leigh…I’m looking forward to something….’

So here I am…and what a week..?

Key lessons from just the past few days..

AC/DC FLUKE OR MANAGED MARKETING

AC/DC interview on 60 minutes last night… Weather man reporting from the AC/DC fans lining up for tickets today in Sydney.. (as I go to the pool in the dark this morning at 6.30.. there were about 20 fans in sleeping bags and heavy jackets who had braved the 5 degrees overnight to make sure they get their tickets..)

We hear on 60 Minutes the tickets in Europe sold out in 10 minutes (scarcity and urgency)…

Is this all a fluke or a well managed marketing campaign…?

I think you know the answer..

Here is clever marketing at work..(and congrats to the organisors).. This is one of the world’s most successful brands and bands at work..

Social proof… cross marketing…. frequency x reach …scarcity and urgency…. excitement.. fun… likeability.. emotion… All combined to produce a powerful, compelling result..

Not bad for a group of blokes who admit to keeping it super simple… and playing no more than 3 chords in any one song… If they can do it, why can’t you in your business?

WHO YOU HANG OUT WITH

I popped down to sit in on my business coaches seminar in Perth at the weekend..

Mal Emery was onstage and I crept in the back of the room and sat down. Within 2 minutes he says, ‘Leigh, come up the front of the room and tell your story… what difference coaching has made to your business..’

And of course, I told them. Blue Rocket has accelerated brilliantly in the past 18 months thanks to Mal’s coaching, challenging, educating, reminding and sharing his contacts and information with us.. We are forever grateful.

But in addition, when I sat back down and listened more.. He told a story of how his daughter Denver is franchising her Heroes Pizza business (using the same consultants we are at the Franchise Institute www.thefranchiseinstitute.com.au ) and he reminded me of a point he had shared with us months ago… We had heard it before, but this time, hearing it again put a slightly different way in a different context, it was a lightening bolt.. a MILLION DOLLAR IDEA…

Sometimes we need to hear the same thing many times before the light goes on… (‘when the student is ready, the teacher appears..’ even though the teacher has always been there…)

Then I had lunch with Mal and 3 other self made multi millionaires.. Boy oh boy.. I learnt more, had more stimulation in 40 minutes than I had the whole of the previous week (and that week had been stimulating, for sure..) Book projects, marketing projects, revenue numbers that would blow your mind, mistakes made, problems averted, new contacts and just great sharing, helping each other do better… the Mastermind at work… 

Napoleon Hill was certainly right…I’ll paraphrase…’who you hang out with will determine where you hang..’
