I’m a day early in writing to you but it’s Friday night and I’m just back from watching Michael Jackson’s ‘This is It’ movie..
I know many people can’t look past whatever is said, written about his personal life.. but if you can look at Jackson the performer, the heart, the spirit… he truly was a Master of Entertainment..
and I, like millions of others, certainly didn’t want to see him go the way he did..very sad..
Jackson reminds me of the Yin and Yan ring I bought in Bali several years ago.. when the Balinese fellow explained the symbol to me and said ‘in the darkest of dark there is light..and in the lightest of light, there is dark..’
Like all of us, there is yin and yan..
The movie gives us some great lessons on how to use the light you are given and IT..

As Jackson sings and dances.. he is 110% in the moment, no holding back, no self judgement..110% giving..
Lesson for you and me: When we are in front of a customer, a prospect, a team member, we be 110% there for that person, for them.. to help them be as good as they can be.. Not 20% somewhere else, with someone else..

THE POWER OF DETAIL

His attention to detail.. be in in the pauses between notes.. be it in how long a note is held.. be it in a camera shot for a video clip..
He was feeling every mood created for his audience..
At one point he says ‘that what’s rehearsal is for ..’ to do it again.. and again.. no matter how tired we are.. until we are happy with it..
Lesson for you and me: Rehearse it again and again.. to get it right for our customers.. our prospects.. our team..
What detail do we need to go to so we create the exact perfect experience that will WOW our customers and clients?

Jackson and Director Kenny Ortega knew the power and importance of teamwork, synergy, harmony, love and spirit in creating such a groundbreaking production.
The number of times Jackson used the words ‘love’.. ‘God bless you..’… ‘I love you..’ in talking to his team, his fellow dancers, the musicians and his audience.. Why? Because not only did he mean it..
he also knew it activated a completely different vibration and outcome in the hearts, minds and bodies of everyone who heard it.
Lesson for you and me: Don’t be afraid to use words like ‘love’, ‘energy’, ‘spirit’, ‘blessed’, ‘passion’, ‘comittment’, ‘make a difference’.
Like the incredible artist who performed at the McDonald’s conference I MC’ed in Perth a few years ago when he said ‘when the heart speaks, the heart listens..’
If nothing else, the movie reminds us… This Is It… and The Man in the Mirror when we dance from the heart and sing from the heart… people listen and we all can do Magic..

It’s cold and blustery here in Perth this morning and the world is mourning the passing of Michael Jackson..

We went out to dinner last night with friends and came back home here for a coffee.

The tribute to Michael was playing on TV…

His song “Heal the World” still moves me powerfully even after all these years since I first heard it and sang it in the Money and You programme back in 1992…

But, like the weather, we have to adapt, we have to deal with it…

Or, like my good friend Geoff Fisher (who was featured on the front page of this weeks West Australian newspaper) reminded me this week, ‘you have to turn what happens to a positive.’

Geoff suffered a massive heart attack at the pool on the Long Weekend.

His heart stopped for 45 minutes and was revived by one of our other good mates who was swimming in the squad with him, Dr. Rob Larbalestier, who is Head of Cardiac Surgery at Royal Perth Hospital.

Geoff is now recovering and will need plenty of support to get back to 100%.. but as he said to me from his hospital bed when I visited him this week, “I will turn this to a positive… this is giving me a second chance..”

Which brings me to lessons and thoughts from the week..

EVERYTHING CHANGES

We’ve all heard the saying ‘nothing is permanent except change’ and this weeks events highlight how true this is..

‘We cannot change the wind, but we can change the set of our sails..’ is an axiom that rings so true for me.

Whether it be me, you, Geoff Fisher, Michael Jacksons family, our businesses, it’s how resilient we are; how we bounce back, recover, take what has happened, then give it an empowering meaning, turn it to our advantage, to help us keep moving forward that’s an essential mental process we all have to keep exercising every day.

I have readers who are devout Christians, and I know right now they are using their spirituality, their belief in God or something bigger than themselves to help them deal with, and bounce back from whatever is setting them back.

Perspective… the bigger picture… your place in the Universe, helps with that resilience.
